Music: Week of The Poet

Typical: you wait ages for one decent spoken word album, and then suddenly you can’t slap handcuffs on an IMF Boss without tripping over one. No less than FOUR albums from some of the UK’s best spoken word talent came out in the last week, each tackling wildly different musical genres. Exciting times: Here’s what’s on offer:

ARTIST: The King’s Will.

ALBUM TITLE: As the Power Fails

POET INVOLVED: Musa Okwonga

OUT:Now (duh)

WHAT: The most ambitious poetry and electronic album of recent years. Like, seriously: when was the last time you heard of an nine track album with NINE AMINATED VIDEOS to go with it? (six have been released so far, my personal favourite being ‘Love, against Homophobia’) It also helps that the songs are tunages as well: Epic in theme and scope, Musa’s distinctive ‘posh’ voice and expansive vocabulary scanned over 80’s synth, 90’s dance, and Dan Le Sacian beats , giving the project the air of Stephen Fry podcasting after a weekend workshop with Jay Z and Kraftwerk.

ALSO DOWNLOAD: Robotica, Further, Self Improvement.

ARTIST: Speed Camera Shy

POET INVOLVED: Raymond Antrobus

ALBUM TITLE: Self titled.

OUT: now (duh)

WHAT: This album actually came out a while ago… on myspace (remember them days?) and it is only through the grace of Californian label Gradient Audio that it has received a proper release this year. The last time an artist got better recognition elsewhere was Floetry, and look how they turned out.

Speed Camera Shy is a marriage in the church of dubstep, Raymond trapped in the twilight zone between rapping and spoken word to impressive effect. An abtract, introspective approach to lyrics reminiscent of early John Berkavitch’s broken beat material. There is a lot of potential in this one.

VIDEO: None.

Download: Blind man’s Clue, Deepest.

ARTIST: Sound of Rum.

ALBUM TITLE: Balance

POET INVOLVED: Kate Tempest

OUT:now (duh)

iTUNES LINK: here.

WEBSITE: soundofrum.com

WHAT: I have already said everything I need to say about ‘Balance,’ but just in case you misunderstood: It’s a cracking album. yes, yes, if you bought the old ‘Balance’ EP you may be a little miffed at the lack of new material, but what is old has been spruced up, and what’s new…. ooooh deary me, what IS new:

This is the standard all Alt-Hop bands must beat. Get This.

Download: Slow, slow, Icarus

ARTIST: LV & Josh Idehen

ALBUM TITLE: ROUTES

POET INVOLVED: Joshua Idehen

OUT: Now (duh)

iTUNES LINK: here.

Website: Josdidit.tumblr.com

WHAT: Oooooookay, I’m promoting my own album. I’m a poet. So I can do this, right?

It’s a mix of dance, garage, 2-step, and… other stuff.I’ll let the album speak for itself now, click here.

VIDEO: none.

DOWNLOAD: I like… screw that, DOWNLOAD THE WHOLE ALBUM!

WHAT ELSE IS COMING/WHAT ELSE TO GET?: Indigo Williams has done a fine EP of instrospective acapella spoken word, as has Alex Gwyther. G.R.E.E.D.S new EP is coming out in June, but you can check out his free Sampler albums here. Gil Scott Heron/Jamie XX’s We’re New Here is, to put it politely, a fucking beast. And then there is Scroobius Pip’s solo ting. Who knows what that’ll be like.
