POEJAZZI is one of the most exciting spoken word and music nights in London. its mission is to programme new and emerging talent, and to promote poetry to new audiences. It has received two five-star reviews at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, in 2007 and 2008, and has been named TimeOut Critic’s Choice, and included in its list of 101 Things To Do Around London. Poejazzi has curated two sellout shows at the Southbank in collaboration with E4 and Udderbelly, One sellout pre-show for Henry Rollins at the Southbank, and successful shows at Proud Galleries, Roundhouse Theatre and C.A.M.P. We have featured many acts who have gone on become mainstays in london and UK spoken word scene, including Ed Sheeran, Jamie Woon, Scroobius Pip, Beardyman, Polar Bear, Natty, Heidi Vogel, Kate Tempest, Inua Ellams and Jono McCleery, etc.
Poejazzi is run by Joshua Idehen, Inua Ellams and Charlotte Morgan Nwokenna.
JOSHUA Idehen is a poet, musician, critic and founder of the highly acclaimed poetry group PiP (A Poem Between People). He is also the frontman of band Benin City. He has reviewed and been reviewed in The Times, The Sunday Times and Prospect magazine. His poetry has been published in anthologies alongside luminaries such as Linton Kwesi Johnson and Anthony Joseph. His album ‘Routes’ with producers LV was released in 2011 and has been cited as one of both Mixmag and Fact magazines’ “Albums of the Year”. “Routes” has also received critical acclaim from the likes of Q magazine, DJMag, iDJ Mag, Clash, and many an online blog. This year Joshua will be releasing Benin City’s new EP in 2012 amongst other literary and music projects.
INUA Ellams is a Word & Graphic artist; a poet, performer & playwright and graphic designer / visual artist. He has published 4 books including the critically acclaimed, best selling poetry pamphlet ‘Thirteen Fairy Negro Tales’ and his first full length play ‘The 14th Tale’, awarded a Fringe First at 09 Edinburgh Festival. He last play ‘Untitled’ completed a 30 date National tour in Nov 2010. He is also the founder of The Midnight Run, something terribly, terribly exciting.
CHARLOTTE Morgan Nwokenna is a pop culture obsessive who combined working in music PR with getting her degree in English Literature at Goldsmiths. She then multitasked her way through getting her Masters degree and working as an editorial assistant in book publishing (Penguin Books) She has guest written for blogs such as The Southbank Centre’s Emerging Artists in Residence blog. In a previous life she wrote music reviews for various Irish publications such as Metro and Hip Hop Ireland. She has also written blogs so acerbic they’ve been taken down by Blogspot themselves. She writes about various high and low culture when it tickles her fancy. She is working on her first novel.
