Micheal Clayton is my favourite movie featuring George Clooney for reasons other than George Clooney. He must have been walking on sets with ‘Steal this scene from me’ plastered on his back, because Tilda Swindon got the Oscar and Tom Wilkinson -yet another great British Actor who hasn’t won an Oscar- blows all the doors off with this blistering opening monologue.
Wilkinson is ‘Arthur Edens,’ a law firm executive who’s apparently suffering from a mental breakdown. In the monologue in question, Edens unravels to Clooney’s Michael Clayton via phone, across scenes of an almost empty office building. It’s one of the best openings to a movie ever made in my opinion. Watch.
